As usual, I’m running just a little bit behind the calendar… just finished Chapter 22 of UNDERTOW (SoulShares #7), and this excerpt (part of a flashback/dream sequence involving Lucien de Winter, Purgatory’s lead bouncer) is just perfect for Valentine’s Day. So here’s to the love that’s more than just a day, more than just the heat…

********

“Mrmph.”

Lucien chuckled as he slid into bed beside Mac. Mac’s shift at Purgatory had been over a couple of hours before Lucien’s, and Mac wasn’t a big one for waking up out of a sound sleep just because someone else was joining him in bed. Truth was, Mac slept like the proverbial rock. But Lucien loved the sounds his partner made when he tried to wake up enough to welcome him home.

“Mrmph to you too.” He worked his way into Mac’s half-awake embrace, relaxing as he breathed in the familiar scent of the oil Mac used on his stump at night. And all the other familiar scents of Mac.

Lucien had been on edge ever since he’d had to help Tiernan and Kevin get rid of the vicious drunk at the end of the bar, earlier tonight – his radar had fucked up big time, that sixth sense that always told him when something was threatening Mac. He’d never let so much as an undercover cop into Purgatory; the fact that the weasel in the leather shorts had made it past him thoroughly pissed him off.

But all the pissed-off could just go piss off, now. There were arms around him and legs were tangling and Mac was making his sweet sleepy noises. Lucien was home.

“Wha’ time is it?”

Lucien felt the breath of Mac’s words against his shoulder.

“Couple of minutes after four. Go back to sleep.” Lucien cupped the back of Mac’s head in his hand. The short hair tickled his palm.

“Maybe I don’t want to.” An arm snaked around Lucien’s waist.

Lucien found Mac’s stubble-rough cheek with a kiss. More than one. Because once he got started, frankly, he couldn’t think of any reason to stop.

He felt Mac’s chuckle, deep down where their bellies were pressed together. And just for a second, he honest to God couldn’t tell whether it was Mac laughing, or himself. He grinned as the last of his tension drained away, and then went back to slow, searching kisses. This was one of the best times, the perfect times. He couldn’t tell where he ended and Mac started. He didn’t care.

Lucien could still remember a time when he’d believed what he’d been told, that men like him never got to have anything like this. Believed that queers like him only pretended to love. Or that love had to be wrapped up in tragedy – that any love story he could imagine himself being a part of would end with someone dying, or going crazy. He’d been young when he met Mac, barely twenty, but those stories had still managed to work their way into him, bone-deep.

But the stories were lies. Lucien knew that now.

Mac’s big hand slid up and down Lucien’s back; a finger traced lazy spirals in what the mirror at the gym told Lucien was a dark pelt scattered with white, then slid down between his ass cheeks. Not demanding anything. Mac, Lucien knew, was just enjoying what was his.

“Love you, Fuzzball,” Mac mumbled. A sleepy kiss brushed the short curls on Lucien’s shoulder.

“Love you more.”

Good afternoon, Snippetteers! — I sincerely hope it’s warmer where you are than it is where I am. My snippet for this week is from my work in progress, UNDERATOW (SoulShares #7). In this passage (seven sentences, again, an extra one for luck), Rhoann is swimming around his temporary home in Central Park, in seal form, trying to figure out what’s going on in his head. And other places. Rhoann’s lived alone for most of his life, and he’s been perfectly happy that way. But meeting Mac has been the catalyst for changes he doesn’t understand…

********

Desire was supposed to make a Fae stronger. It was making Rhoann confused.

Other strange emotions were rising in him as well, like deep-water dwellers rising out of the heart of the Domhnacht Rúnda, where nothing had lived until their rising. Being around Conall, and the other Fae and their humans, put Rhoann on edge, made him uneasy. But being with Mac was different. As much as Rhoann’s newly-awakened desires made him feel a stranger to himself, Mac’s presence was also… comfortable. Comforting.

Welcome, Snippetteers! — my offering this week is from “Deeper than Did Ever Plummet Sound,” my contribution to an m/m romance charity anthology being assembled to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. All the stories, needless to say, have a connection to Shakespeare, or his plays — some are retellings of the plays, some make use of the sonnets. Mine is about a contemporary New York production of The Tempest, possibly my favorite of Shakespeare’s plays, and about the production’s Prospero, Londoner Clarence Limont, one of the great twentieth-century interpreters of the Bard’s work. (Close your eyes and imagine Sir Ian McKellen reciting…)

********

There had been a time when this had been a thrill, this first moment of discovery, looking into a new play for the first time, or into an old one with a new cast. He could remember when it had been exciting.

Maybe it’s time to end it now, while I can still remember
.

He had had this same argument with himself more or less every morning for the last, oh, seven years. Ever since that disastrous production of the Scottish play in Manchester. He’d contemplated paying someone to stand outside the theatre and scream the name of the play, in hopes that lightning would strike or someone would decide to commit a little judicious arson.

Welcome, Snippetteers! Today’s offering is another slice of SoulShares #7, UNDERTOW. And I managed to keep it down to six sentences this time! The POV character for this snippet is Rhoann, a Water Fae and a healer.

********

So what was this, that he felt for Mac, if not love or a desire he had never known? This emotion so strong, he was determined to spend whatever of his own magick it might cost to heal a stranger, because doing so would make Mac’s heart sing.

Yet he suspected his own heart might sing as well, were he to see Lucien’s eyes open. To learn their color, let them wake emotion in him.

The cost of that song? Spending magick for a stranger, the way his mother had once spent magick for him.

Roann2

Hello, Snippetteers! Meet my muse for Rhoann, the Fae main character from UNDERTOW (SoulShares #7), my current work-in-progress. In this snippet (seven sentences again, sorry!), Mac McAllan, the Marine Corps vet who saved Kevin Almstead’s father’s life in Vietnam, is visiting the hole in the ground where Purgatory used to be; most of the site’s been cleared, but he’s just found a duffel bag in the remaining debris that belongs to his partner, Lucien de Winter, the club’s bouncer. Lucien’s been hospitalized since the explosion, in a coma.

********

The bag’s zipper still worked, kind of. Enough to let Mac get a hand inside. He reached in and closed his fist around something soft, worked it out through the gap.

The light attached to the pylon was enough to let him see what he’d grabbed. A t-shirt, ragged even before it had been put through the hell of a gas explosion and a collapsing building, the sleeves ripped out to accommodate a pair of biceps hard enough to deliver a knockout blow all by themselves and massive enough to need their own zip code.

Feel safe at night — sleep with a Marine.

Fuck, Mac hated to cry.

It’s the Saturday before the release of MANTLED IN MIST (currently planned for January 18, but really, it could drop pretty much any day, so watch this space!), which means a six-sentence sneak preview! Peri is Peri Katsura, an employee of Lochlann Doran’s Big Boy Massage. And a six-five blond Adonis has just walked into Big Boy and requested Peri’s services….

********

Big hands ran lightly up and down Peri’s arms. More touching. More of that indescribable sensation that made him want to laugh and moan and drop to his knees, surrender, lose himself. And that was even before he looked into those amazing blue eyes.

Eyes that really saw him. Eyes that held secrets and wanted to share them.

Blowing Smoke Final

Welcome, Snippetteers! It’s week five of the run-up to the launch of MANTLED IN MIST (SoulShares #6), so that means a snippet from BLOWING SMOKE, SoulShares #5. There’s been a bit of a hiccup in the production process for MANTLED, so we have at least one more week’s worth of Snippetteering before it actually comes out – but that just means that next week, and maybe the week after, you get exclusive sneak previews of an unpublished SoulShares novel!

For this week, here’s a bit of Lasair and Bryce. (Lasair is the unconscious one; Bryce has just found him in the basement of Bryce’s Greenwich Village brownstone, in the middle of a web of magickal light.) (And yes, it’s seven sentences again. Sorry about that. But hey, the rainbow’s actually ROYGBIV, right?)

*********

The Fae almost seemed peacefully asleep, blond lashes feathered over skin like porcelain, lips pursed slightly in a gentle pout. His chest rose and fell evenly, and only the occasional twitch of a limb betrayed the fact that the light was still at work on him.

Bryce clenched his jaw, trying to ward off a sharp pang of yearning. Yeah, I still want to wake up next to that. Every morning. Now, here, looking at the disheveled Fae, he could see it, could almost taste a morning kiss. I pick a hell of a time to learn to dream.

Happy New Year — to friends, family, readers, Snippetteers, and you random folks who trip over my blog in the course of Google searches for “hot male-on-male tree action”! (Don’t worry, I don’t judge…) This week’s Snippet is from FIRESTORM, book four of the SoulShares; next week will be BLOWING SMOKE (SoulShares #5), and with any luck at all, by the week after that, MANTLED IN MIST will be out and you’ll be getting one of the first peeks!

Had to go with seven sentences for this one — I hope you’ll forgive me! (The first speaker is Cuinn, who has spent the first three books being the quintessential bad boy, but is now trying to come to grips with the fact that he’s found his SoulShare — who’s a harder case than Cuinn ever dreamed of being.

********

“You don’t need wonder?”

Rian started to shake his head, but was stopped, dead, by a kiss. Not one like last night’s, not the first move of a duel. A gentle, lips-parted kiss, an exchange of breath. Closed eyes, the soft touch of a tongue. A shiver, arrowing down his spine.

“You’re so fucking wrong,” Cuinn whispered, before taking Rian’s mouth for fair.

Hello, Snippetteers! — as I’ve mentioned before, I have a book coming out in mid-January, MANTLED IN MIST, the sixth book in the SoulShares series. So by way of leading up to that, I’m featuring a snippet from each of the other books in the series — this week is week three, which means six sentences from DEEP PLUNGE. DEEP PLUNGE is the story of Lochlann Doran, the oldest Fae in the human world (or pretty much anywhere else, for that matter) and his SoulShare, Garrett Lee Templar, the hottest pole dancer at Purgatory. In this snippet, the two of them have just partially completed their SoulShare bond, and he’s discovering what happens when two SoulShares make love.

********

He felt Lochlann’s laughter as well as heard it, and the sound brought him right back to the one thing that let him think maybe he wasn’t dealing with a head case. The sensation that gripped him when Lochlann came. He could have sworn he heard laughter, except that Lochlann had been totally silent and he himself had been fighting to keep back moans like he only gave up when he was the one being brought off. Laughter; pure, delighted, full-throated laughter. And for an instant, he’d felt a joy so intense his mind couldn’t hold on to it. He was sure in that moment, he’d been happier than he’d ever been in his life, but he couldn’t remember what it had felt like.
