Back Door Final Cover

It’s here! — BACK DOOR INTO PURGATORY, SoulShares Book Nine is live on Amazon and at Riverdale Avenue Books!

The final installment in the SoulShares series weaves together the myriad threads of this compelling paranormal romance in a climax that crosses time and space.

Sometimes Fae love stories aren’t what you expect.

The Marfach—devourer of magick, long-imprisoned mortal enemy of the Fae race—is free of its Antarctic prison.

The Demesne of Purgatory—Fae, humans, a Fade-hound puppy, a Gille Dubh, and a darag—is all that stands between the monster and the power it needs to destroy both the Fae Realm and the human world.

The only clue they have as to how to kill the unkillable is a cryptic note from the Loremasters:

“Osclór, Nartú; Tobar, Soladán; Nidantór, Breathea; Glanadorh, Coromór, Farthor; Scian-omprór, Nachangalte; Crangaol, Síofra; Gastiór, Laoc, Caomhnór; Fánadh, Ngarradh.”

Opener, Strength; Wellspring, Channel; Unmaker, Judge; Cleanser, Equalizer, Sentry; Blade-bearer, Unbound; Tree-kin, Changeling; Binder, Warrior, Guardian; Wanderer, Sundered.

As they rebuild Purgatory from the rubble the Marfach left behind, they have to stand together, using everything they know—everything they are to their partners, lovers, husbands. Everything SoulSharing has made them.

And not everyone who enters the final battle will leave it.

(Rhoann Callte, from UNDERTOW. You’re welcome. *winks*)

Good afternoon, Snippetteers! — today’s snippet is as hot off the presses as it gets, as it’s part of last night’s writing (which means it’s actually part of early this morning’s writing, because that’s how I roll…) What follows is part of Terry’s rumination, as he and Maelduin finish up their amazing Thai carry-out dinner, about what’s about to happen next. At least, as far as Terry’s planned things out. But I would urge you, gentle reader, to remember…

The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men
Gang aft agley….

********

The stunning blond had spent most of dinner finding new ways to be impossibly perfect while making awkward small talk over curried scallops. Small talk which was going to get him nowhere, in the end, because Terry’s mind was made up. Yes, he was attracted to Maelduin. He’d have to be dead not to be — if Terry crossed his eyes just a little, Maelduin looked a whole lot like Tiernan Guaire, the landlord of Raging Art-On and Terry’s new dance studio, and one of the most stunning men Terry had ever met. But really, the simple fact of his attraction alone was more than enough reason for Terry to show Maelduin the door. Because Terry had the world’s worst taste in, and luck with, men. If he, Terry, felt anything for a guy, that feeling was surely fucked up, and enough reason by itself to call for the hook.

Hello, Snippetteers! — I’ve spent the weekend helping to run the Queer Sci Fi vendor table at Gaylaxicon, but I’m back now! And I think you’re going to enjoy this week’s snippet, fresh from STONE COLD, my work-in-progress. Just a bit of intro — Maelduin has only recently arrived from the Fae Realm, and there’s a channeling on him (Fae channel magick rather than casting spells) that lets him understand any word he hears. As you might recall, he’s also having issues with extreme clumsiness, which in this instance has caused him to sit on the remote to Terry’s television, while Terry’s off at work. Maelduin, of course, has never seen or heard of a television…

********

The apartment seemed very quiet when Maelduin pushed the button and silenced the spirits. He wondered where they went, when darkness fell over their prison, the trapped spirits with the strange names — HBO, Food Network, Animal Planet, SSTARMAX, National Geographic. Perhaps they appreciated not being forced to entertain any longer at the whim of the one who held the flat black rectangular key to their prison — or sat on it, as he had done initially. It puzzled him that none of them attempted to escape — none of them listened to his exhortations, although he supposed he understood, as whatever channeling kept them imprisoned kept them from hearing or seeing him — but surely they wanted their freedom? Yet instead of attempting to flee, or planning escape, they persisted in creating food out of ingredients even a Fae found peculiar, engaging in palace intrigues and debaucheries that were nearly Fae in their complexity and the rhythm of their speech, whispering to cats possessed by demons, and attempting to sell him Medicare supplement plans, whatever those were.

At least the spirit named Gordon Ramsay had taught Maelduin the proper use of a stove, assuming it would ever be safe for him to be around open flame again.

Maelduin1

Good afternoon, Snippetteers! — sorry so late today, it’s been a busy morning and afternoon and it’s not over yet. But here I am, and here Maelduin is (fine to look at, isn’t he?), having just had his first attempt at what he thinks is a final seduction deflected by Terry. This, needless to say, is not a situation with which most Fae are at all familiar, even Fae of a House considered cursed with an inability to love.

********

How had matters spun so far out of his control, in less than a day? A lifetime’s work and self-discipline, consummated at last, would have been wasted and worthless, had he not come through the Pattern… but the act of coming through the Pattern had robbed him of every fruit of that discipline, left him cursed and clumsy and helpless.

Helplessness was not a state any Fae could bear. One of the darkest of the many words as’Faein for torture, danamhris, came from an ancient root meaning, simply, ’to be done unto.’ Maelduin could not endure it. Would not.

Hello, Snippetteers! — this week’s snippet (seven sentences again, can we maybe see about adding another stripe to the flag?) is from STONE COLD. It’s the morning after Terry and Maelduin’s first, erm, encounter, and Maelduin has just gone off into the kitchen to make the two of them something to eat. For once, I don’t think any more background than that is needed. *winks*

********

“How are you going to eat with that on your face?”

For a second, even lying flat on his back, Terry felt dizzy, as if the bed had opened up and dropped him into a bottomless pit. Maelduin’s words were ordinary, but there was nothing ordinary about the way he said them — the other man’s voice was suddenly smoking hot baritone sex.

Terry’s hand was shaking as he took the pillow off his head. He hoped Maelduin didn’t notice. I really, really need to get hold of myself. The tall, lean blond was just another one-night stand.

As if it being Friday weren’t enough…! First, A SUMMER’S DAY, an amazing anthology of twelve m/m takes on the plays and sonnets of Shakespeare, is live as of today, with all proceeds going to benefit the It Gets Better Project. Here’s an excerpt from my contribution, “Deeper Than Did Ever Plummet Sound,” in which we meet Clarence, a fading star of the London stage headlining an off-off-Broadway production of “The Tempest,” and Jaymes, his starry-eyed Ariel.

<>

Jaymes’ mouth twisted. Frustration? Anger? “It’s his favorite way of getting into my personal space, where he has no business being. And reminding me that I have nappy hair. And reminding me that somebody like me has no business doing Shakespeare.”

All Clarence could do was stare. “Has he actually had the gall to say that to your face?” he finally managed.

Jaymes’ tight shrug made Clarence feel hollow inside. “He’s not the first, he won’t be the last.”

“Wonderful. We have positive proof the man’s a certifiable lunatic as well as a clinging arsecrumb.” Thank God, there was a drink next to his elbow at last. He snatched it up and drained nearly half in one go. “Has he paid even one iota of attention to the London stage for the last, oh, five seasons?”

“What did you just call him?”

Ah, the smile was back. Not quite at full wattage, but enough for Clarence to warm himself at. “One of my favorite non-Shakespearean epithets.”

“Worthy of inclusion in the canon.”

Clarence laughed, trying to make it sound like less of a bark than his laughter usually did. “Perhaps I’ll slip it into a rehearsal sometime.”

“I double dog dare you.”

And if I take your dare, what will you forfeit? Christ, he’d almost asked aloud. Back to staring into his glass — a damned sight safer than looking into eyes that threatened to melt him.

Happy reading — I’m off to stage manage at the Irish Fair of Minnesota for the weekend. If you’re out there, stop by the River Stage and say hi!

IrishBird

Good morning, Snippetteers! — I may be away for the next couple of weeks (I’m a stage manager at the Irish Fair of Minnesota next weekend, and the weekend after that I’m going to be in Milwaukee happily NOT working at their Irish Fest) so I thought I’d leave you with something especially memorable this weekend. Background you need to know for this snippet: Terry and Maelduin have just arrived at Terry’s apartment, where Maelduin, obsessed in a very Fae manner with his own personal needs (namely, his need to find a place to stay and hide until he can figure out why he has been apparently cursed with a level of clumsiness not ordinarily seen anywhere other than the vaudeville stage), is in the process of seducing Terry. Things have reached ‘that point’, and Terry has just announced that matters won’t be progressing any further without a condom. Which, naturally enough for a Fae, Maelduin doesn’t have any of, so Terry’s just gone into his bedroom to fetch one. (Again, seven sentences, but “Bleeding balls!” is only one word as’Faein, so I’m not counting it as a full sentence….)

********

As he slid the drawer open, there was a crash from the living room. “Fola’magairl!

Whatever that word meant, it was definitely a curse. Terry snatched up a condom and a half-full pump bottle of Slipnslide and stuck his head back out into the living room.

Maelduin was bent over next to the coffee table, stark naked and nursing his shin, still cursing under his breath. Terry bit his lip hard to keep from laughing. The most gorgeous man I’ve ever seen in my life, but I swear to God he could break his leg tripping over a stain on the carpet.

Oh, and come find me on Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/Soulshares/ ) and Twitter (@RoryNi)!

Good morning-almost-afternoon, Snippetteers! I have a hot-off-the-presses snippet for you this week, just added last night to my WIP, STONE COLD (SoulShares #8). This one had to be seven sentences rather than six — I’m sure you can see why — and just by way of background, a “wellspring” doesn’t have anything to do with actual water, it’s a place where magickal energy wells “up” from the Fae Realm into the human world. They’ve been busting out all over lately, and they’re kind of a pain in the arse for our human and Fae protagonists. “Kevin” is Kevin Almstead, the human MC from book one, HARD AS STONE; the three “figures” are Mac, Lucien, and Rhoann, the triad from UNDERTOW (SoulShares #7).

*********

A brittle, musical chime filled the air, an instant before three dripping-wet figures appeared, sitting in the middle of a spreading puddle in the heart of the wellspring.

“That wasn’t so — oh, hell, Kevin!”

As deep a funk as he’d been in moments before, Kevin still had a hard time keeping himself from bursting out laughing at the look on Mac’s face. Rhoann had something of an aversion to clothes, and was getting his human partners accustomed to going without in private. And they’d all apparently come from their home away from home at the bottom of the Pool in Central Park, where clothing was less than optional — it was pointless.

“I’m not looking.” Not strictly true, but close enough for jazz.
