Sorry I’m late, Snippetteers — it’s before midnight somewhere, right? Work on Back Door into Purgatory has been terribly slow — so much so that I’m reluctant to post on a weekly basis, because it reminds me how little I’ve actually gotten written during the week. But I’d like to share a bit of my most recent writing. Can’t give you any background — that would be a spoiler — but I hope you enjoy!

********

Something heavy jumped onto Tiernan’s abdomen, jolting him out of restless sleep. He manifested a knife from his crystal hand even before he was fully awake; he’d had to kill too many nocturnal predators to count during his wanderings. Waiting, even waiting for his eyes to open, was a luxury he rarely had under those circumstances.

Nothing was trying to kill him yet, though. And whatever was crouched on his bladder was too damned small to feel so heavy.

“Are you going to kill me, or just wait there until I piss myself?”

Hello, Snippetteers! — sorry for the long absence, hope today’s entry makes up for it a little. (Of course, if you’re the kind of person who thinks a good tease doesn’t ‘make up for’ anything, we might have to agree to disagree. *winks*

To get you up to speed for the snippet — Maelduin has finally come face to face with Tiernan, his uncle, the murderer of his father, the Fae he’s spent his life training to kill. The trouble is, Maelduin’s just been presented with a couple of hard truths — he now knows why Tiernan killed his father, and he knows that Terry, Maelduin’s SoulShare, is in danger and in need of immediate rescue. The only solution Maelduin can come up with is to surrender; the only problem with that solution is that Tiernan doesn’t want to accept. (Oh, and Clo’che is the word as’Faein for living Stone, which is what Tiernan’s left hand is made of.)

And I might, just might, be off next weekend, too, because JOHN BARROWMAN is coming to ComicCon Minneapolis. *squee!!!!!*

********

Getting up was difficult to the point of humiliation. No one spoke — though the dragonet hissed in what might have been laughter. Maelduin ignored it, choosing to look instead at the male he was sworn to kill. “Why did you feel you needed no blade to meet me?” he blurted into the awkward silence.

Tiernan said nothing, but extended his crystal hand again. Even warier of the gesture a second time, Maelduin stared as Tiernan produced a grace-blade from the Clo’che of his own hand, balanced it perfectly across two fingers as the harsh light winked off its wickedly sharp edge, then flipped it into the air and reabsorbed it back into his hand.

Hello, Snippetteers! — sorry for the long absence, I’m only now getting back to writing and my last couple of weekends can be found in the Urban Dictionary under the definition for “chaos.” But I’m back! (And I’m registered for GRL in October, as a Supporting Author, but hoping to upgrade because I l-o-o-o-o-v-e doing readings!)

This weeks snippet is part of a conversation between Josh and Conall; they’re trying to figure out what to do about Tiernan’s nephew, Maelduin, who has come through the Pattern to take revenge for his father’s death (his father being Tiernan’s brother, for which murder Tiernan was exiled to the human world to begin with). The first speaker below is Conall.

********

“I’m guessing this is what Aine was warning us about, in the message that came back through the Pattern.”

“‘Guard the Guardian,’ you mean.”

Conall nodded. It would have been nice if the ancient Loremaster could have been a bit more forthcoming, but no use trying to put the lightning back in the cloud. “She must have known our new friend was coming through. And if she saw fit to warn us, one way or another he’s definitely going to be a thorn-ball under Tiernan’s scrotum.”

Hello, Snippetteers! — rather than try to come up with an appropriate epitaph for 2016, I decided to just do my bit to make sure the year ends on a high note. Those of you who have read HARD AS STONE (SoulShares #1) know exactly what this picture signifies — and those of you who haven’t will at least have an inkling by the time you finish this Snippet from STONE COLD. Yes, it’s seven sentences, but as usual, I trust you’ll understand the necessity. The POV character is Kevin Almstead, the human main character from HARD AS STONE. Oh, and just remember — Fae can Fade. *winks*

And here’s wishing everyone a peaceful — and powerful — New Year.

*******

Tiernan had taught Kevin to love breath play, early on in their relationship, and by now his response when Tiernan slipped his tie up over the collar of his dress shirt and started tugging to tighten it again around his throat was pure reflex: rapid heartbeat, shallow panting breaths, and a hard-on that could have used its own zip code.

“Maybe you should lie down.” Tiernan started slowly backing them up toward their bed, still tightening the improvised noose around Kevin’s neck and working his body against Kevin’s in a way that made Kevin pretty sure he wasn’t going to make it to blackout before he came like a —

“Oh, sorry, bad time?”

Kevin didn’t understand the Faen obscenity his husband whispered. He didn’t need to, though. “Yes, Conall. A very bad time.”

Hello, Snippetteers! — you can see why this is a little late, I’ve been in cryogenic suspension and it’s taken me just a little while to thaw out. (Seriously, if I’m going to live where the air hurts my face, I’d better be getting SOME benefit out of it!)

I’m attaching pretty much the hottest-off-the-presses excerpt I have — I’ve been snowed and frozen in all day, so I’ve been spending my time writing, and as of this moment there are only two sentences beyond this point in the WIP. And for once, it’s actually six sentences — and, really, needs no introduction.

********

Fae were naturally immune to human diseases, but it hadn’t taken Conall long, after his arrival in the human world, to learn that he was as prone as any human to tension headaches. And he could feel a dandy coming on. Yet another wellspring had emerged within shouting distance of the great nexus. His partner’s ex-boyfriend was trapped in it, and Conall would eat someone else’s shorts, since he never wore any himself, if the trap had been laid by anyone other than the incredibly touchy daragin and Gille Dubh. And then there was the problem of Tiernan Guaire’s newly-arrived long-lost nephew, who claimed a SoulShare bond with said ex, not to mention the right to blood vengeance for the crime that had originally gotten Tiernan thrown out of the Realm.

At least there’s nothing left to go wrong.

Hello, Snippetteers! — my apologies for being MIA for so long… last weekend, I was off the grid, on a Caribbean cruise. (My picture for this week is one I took at the Mayan ruins in Tulum — if I ever self-pub “Obsidian,” my snake shifter story, one of these shots just might be the cover, because I definitely found the ruined city where the Lamiae live!) And the weekend before that, the weekend after the election, frankly, I wasn’t up for much except staring at the wall in a more-or-less catatonic state…

This week’s snippet was written somewhere between Grand Cayman and the Bahamas 😉 and it involves Tiernan and Kevin, the main characters from HARD AS STONE (SoulShares #1), trying to have a conversation in a hot tub. It goes about as well as you might expect…. (Oh, and it’s seven sentences. I really don’t think the first “sentence” ought to count….)

********

“Shit.” Tiernan worked the fingers of his crystal hand into Kevin’s dark hair, drawing his husband’s head to rest on his shoulder. “Stay up here, at least your mouth isn’t distracting me this way.”

“Optimist, aren’t you?” Kevin nipped at Tiernan’s throat.

Scilim g’fua lom tú.”

“I hate you too, just as much.”

(Rhoann Callte, from UNDERTOW. You’re welcome. *winks*)

Good afternoon, Snippetteers! — today’s snippet is as hot off the presses as it gets, as it’s part of last night’s writing (which means it’s actually part of early this morning’s writing, because that’s how I roll…) What follows is part of Terry’s rumination, as he and Maelduin finish up their amazing Thai carry-out dinner, about what’s about to happen next. At least, as far as Terry’s planned things out. But I would urge you, gentle reader, to remember…

The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men
Gang aft agley….

********

The stunning blond had spent most of dinner finding new ways to be impossibly perfect while making awkward small talk over curried scallops. Small talk which was going to get him nowhere, in the end, because Terry’s mind was made up. Yes, he was attracted to Maelduin. He’d have to be dead not to be — if Terry crossed his eyes just a little, Maelduin looked a whole lot like Tiernan Guaire, the landlord of Raging Art-On and Terry’s new dance studio, and one of the most stunning men Terry had ever met. But really, the simple fact of his attraction alone was more than enough reason for Terry to show Maelduin the door. Because Terry had the world’s worst taste in, and luck with, men. If he, Terry, felt anything for a guy, that feeling was surely fucked up, and enough reason by itself to call for the hook.

TiernanMikeGrell3

Hello, Snippetteers! — I’ve just come up for air after plowing through edits for the latest SoulShares, so I thought I’d do a bit of a look back today. My six lines for this weekend are from DEEP PLUNGE (SoulShares #3). Tiernan (pictured above, as rendered by the incomparable Mike Grell) and Lochlann are in Tiernan’s office at Purgatory — and one of these six lines is my original editor’s favorite line from the first four books. Points if you can guess which one. *winks*

********

“Sit down.” Tiernan motioned toward the chair in front of the desk as he dropped into his own.

“Thanks, I prefer to stand.” Lochlann arched a brow, looking pointedly down at the other Fae.

“I am sprung from the loins of an entire race of assholes.” Tiernan rolled his eyes, turning in his chair to check out the monitors before swinging back to look narrowly up at Lochlann. “Although without the attitude, I have to admit, I’d have a hard time believing you’re Fae.”

Cuinn24

Hello, Snippetteers! — your six sentences for today come from FIRESTORM (SoulShares #4), which is Cuinn and Rian’s story. By way of a little setup, Cuinn has just extricated himself and Rain from what could have been a thoroughly nasty situation in the Fae Realm, by the quickest means possible. Which involved opening a portal between the Realm and the human world (Cuinn’s the only Fae who can do that) and dragging Rian through it, bare-ass naked and dripping wet. And they land in Purgatory, Tiernan Guaire’s nightclub, pretty much right under Tiernan’s nose….

********

“You can quit staring now, your Lordship.” Or I can sandpaper your eyeballs, he barely managed not to add. SoulShare jealousy. Which he needed right now like he needed a third testicle. In the middle of his forehead. “Lord Tiernan Guaire, of the Demesne of Earth, meet Rian Aodán, Prince Royal of the Demesne of Fire.”
